According to the charity Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT), more children are being admitted to hospital with burns after playing with their parents hair straighteners.
All makes of hair straighteners, including ghd, generate very high temperatures (upto 230c) to heat the ceramic plates enough to straighten your hair. That’s hot of course so touching the plates can give you a nasty burn. Incidentally, hot straighteners can also damage furniture – that’s why you should always use a protective heat mat.
According to stats from the CAPT, the number of children getting burned by straighteners has risen by 50% in the last 10 years. Alder Hey childrens hospital in Liverpool treats at least 40 children for these types of burns.
So don’t carelessly leave your straighteners out when you’ve finished with them – wrap them in a protective heat case or wrap. Remind your teenage daughters not to leave them within reach of younger sisters …friends of ours had a lucky escape when a 7 year old found her older sisters ghds left on a dressing table.
Play safe and put them out of reach too even when cold.
The other day I mentioned that one of our honourable MPs claimed for ghds on expenses. In that article I said that as the claim was rejected I wasn’t able to find out where Sarah McCarthy-Fry bought her ghds from.
But thanks to The Telegraph for publishing the rejected claim information I can now reveal that McCarthy-Fry bought her £99.50 straighteners from Garbo’s – a salon in Portsmouth.
You might remember that one of our beloved MP’s tried to claim for her ghd straighteners on expenses? Surprisingly, this wasn’t deemed to be a purchase worthy of public funding and Sarah McCarthy-Fry, MP for Portsmouth North, had her claim rejected. Shame 
Well I thought I’d be able to view the published expense claims and find out which shop she ordered her ghds from. But although you can see all her expenses right here, all rejected claims have not been published – so we’ll never know.
I hope at least that she shopped around and compared ghd prices to try and get us all value for money.
